SANFORD, MICHIGAN – December 9, 2011. Established in 1970, the Sanford Historical Society announces the newest addition to their Michigan logging display.
"Big Wheels" log carriers were used by Michigan lumbermen in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to get cut trees out of the woods and are an important part of Michigan’s lumbering history.
Recently built by a group of Sanford Historical Society volunteers, the full size “Big Wheels” were just delivered by a horse team and are now on display at the museum grounds for all to see and enjoy. Striking in appearance and impressive in size (the wheels are 10 foot high), "Big Wheels" were invented by Silas Overpack of Manistee, Michigan around 1875. While there are other displays of "Big Wheels" in Michigan, this is the first set to be on display in the Mid-Michigan area.
See the "Big Wheels" on display at the Sanford Historical Society’s Centennial Museum grounds year round. The address is 2222 Smith Street, Sanford, Michigan 48657 .
